Dear mr. Gaiman,

I am an aspiring author who very much enjoys reading your books, so first of all, thank you for your great works :)

(my favourite book is probably Good Omens, but maybe just because it was my first one, and because I also adore Terry Pratchett a lot)

secondly, while I enjoy writing, I very much have a problem with describing things. most of my chapters are just internal monologues with barely any context to the setting, and I want to change that. Every time I try to describe surroundings or rooms, it feels like I just poorly described a room and filled with a thesaurus' worth of negative adjectives (I enjoy writing angsty things)

Do you have any tips for me, or by extension anyone else who is trying to get better at writing?

thanks a lot :3

neil-gaiman:

Sometimes it’s best to describe places as if you are telling a friend on a postcard or in a text about the place you stayed last night and you don’t have much room to explain. So you hit the high points or the one most important thing. “The kitchen wallpaper had probably once been cream coloured but appeared to have had food thrown at it, had never been entirely cleaned off, and now was mostly a rancid collection of browns.” “The lounge was dominated by a large grey sofa, composed of four unattached modular blocks, which meant that when people sat on it they would rapidly find themselves drifting away from each other across the polished wooden floor.” “The bedroom was small and airless and the furniture that had been abandoned there was old and unloved.” Or whatever.

I really enjoyed the LGBTQ+ representation in this season of Good Omens! It was lovely to see queer characters that weren't skinny young waifs that appear for a second to be oggled and then disappear. Seeing Andrew O'Neill be unquestioningly referred to as Mutt's spouse (without any funny looks or jabs about their gender or appearance from any of the characters) made my heart sing

Thank you so much. Andrew rocked the ball-gown and the gold Doc Martens.

Andrew’s Instagram in case you want to go and tell them you liked their performance:

iona--blog asked:

Hi Neil, I just finished watch season two, and apart from emotional devestation of the plot (thank you I hate you I love you), I wanted to say how emotional the sheer Pratchett-esqueness of it all made me. Obviously the easter eggs were a pleasure (CMOT Dibbler, six-inch tall angry scottish men, seamstress humour and the countless more I'm sure I'll pick up on on repeat viewing.) But the street traders meeting felt like something straight from the Discworld. Terry had such a keen eye for the beautiful humour in mundane, silly, regular people. Of course the apocalypse might happen. But people have things to say about the Christmas lights. Of course they do. I started reading the discworld books when I was 8, and the supply was so great (our library would order books in if you asked nicely and had it no limit on how many books you could borrow), I quickly became addicted. I read them all, too quickly, looking back. And then one day there weren't any more new books to read. And today, watching Good Omens s2, it was almost as though I got to revisit a new chapter. And I wanted to thank you. Because Terry's spirit is so present in season two its hard to imagine you didn't come up with it together while eating sushi.

neil-gaiman:

Thank you! That put a huge smile on my face.
